Background of the study
Primary healthcare centers are essential for delivering basic health services, especially in regions with limited access to specialized care. In Esan Central Local Government Area, these centers provide immunizations, maternal and child health services, and nutritional support, all of which are crucial for reducing infant mortality. Their effectiveness is influenced by factors such as staffing, resource allocation, and accessibility to the community (Omoregie, 2023). Recent research underscores that robust primary healthcare systems can lead to significant improvements in infant survival rates by facilitating early detection and treatment of health issues (Igbinedion, 2024). However, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, insufficient funding, and staffing shortages persist, limiting the potential benefits of these centers (Omole, 2025). This study aims to evaluate the role of primary healthcare centers in lowering infant mortality and to identify strategies for enhancing service delivery.
Statement of the problem
Infant mortality remains a critical issue in Esan Central despite the presence of primary healthcare centers. Inadequate resources, staffing challenges, and poor infrastructure compromise the centers’ ability to provide timely and effective care, resulting in preventable infant deaths. These constraints hinder the centers’ full potential in reducing infant mortality and require a thorough evaluation of service delivery processes and infrastructural adequacy (Omoregie, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
To evaluate the effectiveness of primary healthcare centers in reducing infant mortality.
To identify challenges affecting service delivery.
To propose recommendations for improving healthcare outcomes.
Research questions:
How effective are primary healthcare centers in reducing infant mortality?
What are the key challenges that limit their performance?
What measures can enhance the impact of primary healthcare centers on infant survival?
Research Hypotheses:
Primary healthcare centers significantly reduce infant mortality rates.
Inadequate resources negatively affect service delivery.
Improved infrastructure and staffing will enhance infant health outcomes.
Significance of the study
This study provides vital insights into the role of primary healthcare centers in reducing infant mortality, offering recommendations for policy and infrastructural improvements. The findings aim to guide interventions that improve maternal and child health services, ultimately contributing to a reduction in preventable infant deaths in Esan Central.
Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the evaluation of primary healthcare centers and their role in reducing infant mortality in Esan Central Local Government Area, Edo State.
Definitions of terms:
Primary Healthcare Centers: Local facilities providing basic health services.
Infant Mortality: The death of children under one year of age.
Service Delivery: The manner in which health services are provided to the public.
